Spotlight on:

The Navronne Stories

Lighthouse Books Carol Berg's Navronne books, The Lighthouse Duet of Flesh and Spirit and Breath and Bone, and The Sanctuary Duet of Dust and Light and Ash and Silver, thave won prestigious awards, like the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature and the Colorado Book Award, and received excellent reviews from Publisher's Weekly, Kirkus reviews, Library Journal, SFRevu, Fantasy BookSpot, and dozens of others. Readers have also been very generous with their comments. But one of the most common questions Carol gets is:

Which pair do I read first?

And Carol's simple answer is, "Either one"!

The Lighthouse Duet and the Sanctuary Duet were written to be parallel stories. as in, there was a lot more to the complex world of Navronne than what Valen experienced. Though the Sanctuary books begin much earlier--approximately three years before Valen's story begins--the action of both duologies ends on the same day--the Winter Solstice of year 1294, when the world is irrevocably changed. [Lest you worry, this is not a spoiler for an epic fantasy series!]

So, do some characters make the crossover between duologies?

Yes! But I am not naming names, or tellling how they figure in the overall of the other set. There are no spoilers for the other story. But there will definitely be some (fun, we hope) surprise encounters.

Sanctuary Books The new covers: It is still startling to see the new covers for the Navronne Books. Though well done, I never thought the moody Luis Royo covers of the Lighthouse books quite caught Valen--the difficulty of having characters on covers. And though I thought the Gene Mollica Sanctuary covers captured the dramatic changes in Lucian and his environment very well, I was excited to see the more abstract concepts of the new Sanctuary covers. I love how the artist incorporated a mask in all four of the Navronne covers - though, truly, purebloods wear vertical half masks, not horizontal. Shhhhh....... But I love the sense of antiquity in the Lighthouse frames, and the glimpses of the monastery and ancient maps around them. And then the splashes of an artist's palette in the Dust and Light cover, and the muted tones of sea fog in the Ash and Silver cover capture the feelings of the Sanctuary books in a more modern way..

Illusions of Sorcery and Myth window

The Chimera Adventures, written by my alter ego, Cate Glass, are now up to three.

I wanted to try my hand at an episodic series - an ensemble crew who addresses a particular puzzle in each volume, like so many of my favorite mystery and adventure series. I call the Chimera books my own version of (pre-Cruise)Mission Impossible. With magic. In a world reminiscent of Renaissance Italy. You know, intrigue, mercenaries, antiquities, poison rings, artists, family rivalries, creepy collectors of rare artifacts...and people, political skullduggery of all kinds. And, sure enough, with Carol being an epic fantasy writer, Cate lets the mythos of the Costa Drago (the mythos that makes using magic a capital crime) creep into everyday doings, until the fate of the world hangs in the balance...

Read more about the Chimera or test the waters by reading excerpts at at Cate's website. And yes, unlike some episodic series, the books need to be read in order:

Book 1: An Illusion of Thieves
Book 1: A Conjuring of Assassins
Book 1: A Summoning of Demons

Who knows...someday Cate may get on her broomstick and see about some further adventures for Romy and the crew...
